FRACTAL FIELD THERAPY

What is Energy Psychology?

Energy psychology focuses on the body’s energy systems as they relate to emotions, behavior, psychological health, etc. These systems include the electrical activity of the nervous system, acupuncture meridians, charkas, biofields (also called aura), and morphogenetic fields.

While our psychological functioning includes cognitive, hormonal, neurological, genetic, neurochemical, and environmental factors, at a fundamental level bioenergy is involved in emotions and behavior. Just as a radio receiver is informed at a subtle level by radio waves, subtle levels of energy catalyze psychological and other aspects of functioning. Energy psychology is applicable to a wide range of areas including psychopathology, psychotherapy, education, vocational guidance, physical health, sports and peak performance.

What is Energy Psychotherapy?

Energy therapy or psychotherapy includes approaches that harness bioenergy systems in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological problems. In addition to standard therapeutic elements such as rapport and discussion, energy therapies also involve procedures that specifically address the underlying energetic aspects of the problem through manual muscle testing, energy checking, and processes such as having the client stimulate acupuncture meridians and chakras (by holding, rubbing, tapping, etc), assuming specified body postures and movements, use of certain affirmations and assertions, and more. Many proponents of energy therapies also focus on the relationship among bioenergy, consciousness, thought, intentionality, and spirituality. Many energy therapies achieve observable and measurable results rapidly and generally without causing undue emotional distress.

Among the most widely known energy therapies are Energy Diagnostic and Treatment Methods (EDxTM), Energy Consciousness Therapy, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT), and Thought Field Therapy (TFT). Approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Eye Movement Integration (EMI), while not described as energy therapies per se, also appear to be energetically oriented. Energy psychotherapy is highly compatible with many traditional approaches to therapy.

Fractal Field Therapy attempts to provide a unifying scheme to these methods and approaches.

Using Chaos Theory in Therapy

A constant flux within a system which is then hindered from coming to equilibrium is one way of thinking about emotional turmoil, but this is far beyond the principles of 19 th century equilibrium thermodynamics which evolved to explain how systems would eventually all settle down. Neurotic individuals are stable systems that are slowly pushed into a non-equilibrium state by the analyst's interventions. At a critical point an intervention then pushes the individual into a new state and they become an unstable system. The beneficial results of this event are characterized as openness to new things and an increase in information in the system.

The mathematician and philosopher Poincare and founder of chaos therapy said in 1882. It may happen that small differences in the initial conditions produce very great ones in the final phenomena. A small error in the former will therefore produce an enormous error in the later. Predictions becomes therefore impossible, and this could explain why psychology has been such a poor predictive science. Hence contemporary non-linear dynamics shed an unexpected light on basic psychoanalytic concepts, and shows Freud's thought to be broadly scientific. For example his argument that the very same psychological conditions that give rise developmentally to adults neurosis, figure also in the aetiology of adult sexual perversion.

These are the basic principles of non-linear phenomena, bifurcation and chaos. They are demonstrated in a simple case of faucet leaking, when the leak is increased beyond a certain point the time interval between drops will first alternate periodically between a short and a long interval. As the load is further increased, the period will double again, further increases in the leak will cause the period to double again and again and the dripping finally becomes completely irregular. When this occurs we are observing chaos. The alteration between different time intervals or period doubling appears at specific points called bifurcation points. The idea of bifurcation offers a complex but very important model of unpredictability in a deterministic system.

Bifurcation theory is a branch of mathematics which originated in Eric Poincare's seminal work on systems of non-linear differential equations. The term bifurcation was coined by Poincare to designate the emergence of several new and stable solutions from a given solution. The existence of bifurcation points is predetermined by existing non-linear dynamical forces, mechanisms and relations, intrinsically describing the dynamic system. However beyond bifurcation points, the system becomes open to a multiplication of new possibilities and it cannot be predicted which of the new possibilities will be realized. Freud ends his Leonardo da Vinci study in 1910 by saying at the same time we are all too ready to forget that in fact everything to do with our life is chance, chance which nevertheless has a share in the law and necessity of nature and which merely lacks any connection with our wises and illusions.

Humans are open systems that are processing constant change and interaction with the environment. While closed systems tend to reach equilibrium, open systems may have both the oscillatory and bifurcation evolutionary behaviour patterns. So the differential equations that govern such non-equilibrium systems are non-linear. Basically behavior could intrinsically be chaotic and therefore impossible to predict, plus therapy might be helpful in the way it actually produces more chaos in a system which is too stable and therefore not prone to change.

What is a fractal?

A fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole. Fractals are generally self-similar and independent of scale. Fractals are an important aspects of chaos theory.

Chaos Theory

Chaos is apparently unpredictable behavior arising in a deterministic system because of great sensitivity to initial conditions. Chaos arises in a dynamical system if two arbitrarily close starting points diverge exponentially, so that their future behavior is eventually unpredictable. Weather is considered chaotic since arbitrarily small variations in initial conditions can result in radically different weather later. This may limit the possibilities of long-term weather forecasting. (The canonical example is the possibility of a butterfly's sneeze affecting the weather enough to cause a hurricane weeks later.)

Devaney defines a function as chaotic if it has sensitive dependence on initial conditions, it is topologically transitive, and periodic points are dense. In other words, it is unpredictable, indecomposable, and yet contains regularity. Allgood and Yorke define chaos as a trajectory that is exponentially unstable and neither periodic or asymptotically periodic. That is, it oscillates ir-regularly without settling down.

The human psyche can be modeled as a chaos system.

Fractal Field Therapy Definitions

Fractal Construct

- An unstable dissipative psychological structure.
- Has an hierarchy of internal structures.
- Elusive and hard to track.
- Often alters personality
- There can be multiple fractal constructs.
- Examples of fractal constructs are Imprints, Anticipatory Anxiety. A phobia is a prefractal construct.

Principles of Fractal Field Therapy

The human energetic field can be modeled as a system that can be explained by 'Chaos Theory'.

Psychological dysfunctions are fractal entropic blocks in the person's energetic field. Fractal blocks are often multi-systemic and affect the personality. It is possible to have multiple fractal blocks. These energy blocks and or cysts often result in disruption of multiple feedback systems in the body. The body keeps compensating for these blocks by using increasing amounts of energy, physical and psychological dysfunction appear.

Diagnosis is aimed at identifying the nature of the cyst/block, the site of storage of the energy, and the holding pattern of storage of the entropic energy which are fractal in nature.

Therapy consist of releasing these blocks and restoring the body to its naturally negatively entropic state by releasing these fractal blocks.

While other systems of energy psychotherapy have techniques there is no underlying rationale as to why techniques work and how they work. Fractal field therapy in comparison states that you need to correctly identify the nature of the energetic restriction and then you can release it.

Prefractal blocks can often be released by any techniques because they represent the most superficial blocks in the energetic system.

INPUT -----> PROCESS -----> RESULTS -----> OUTPUT

(intermediate results)

Types of Dysfunctions

Input Dysfunction - phobias

Process Dysfunction - anticipatory anxiety, allergies

Output Dysfunction - Imprints

An imprint is a significant experience or sequence of experiences from the past in which the person formed a belief or cluster of beliefs. It also involves the unconscious role-modeling of the significant others.

Description of how a psychological dysfunction occurs energetically

A precipitating input occurs. This input can be a word, sound, phrase or a trauma or accident or even a substance. This input then activates a particular mechanism. Depending on the type of mechanism that is activated as well as whether the input is in passive or active storage the dysfunction begin. For some issues, it may require a multiplicity of similar inputs before the appropriate mechanisms are activated.

Energy Cyst

Research that Dr Upledger conducted in the late 70s with a biophysicist named Dr Zvi Karni led them to discover that the body can retain the imprints of physical trauma in the tissues. These imprints, which can also include intense feelings that occurred at the time of injury, actually leave a residue embedded in the body. Dr Upledger calls these areas of restricted or disorganized energy 'energy cysts'.

The idea behind this is: When an accident occurs, the energy of the accident enters the body. This fits with the laws of thermodynamics, which tell us that energy cannot be created or destroyed. They also tell us that the natural tendency of atom molecules and energy is toward disorganization. When this external, disorganized energy. the 'energy of injury', is forced into the body, it penetrates into the tissues to a depth determined by the amount of force versus the density of the tissues. This force is countered only by the density of the tissues it is trying to penetrate.

A blow to the foot or ankle might penetrate through the leg all the way to the pelvis. Once it reaches its depth of maximum penetration, it stops and forms a localized 'ball' of energy that doesn't belong there. If your body is vital and able, the 'energy of injury' can dissipate and normal healing can occur, but if your body is unable to dissipate this energy, it is compacted into a smaller and smaller ball in order to minimize the are of disruption to tissue function. As it becomes more compressed and localized, the disorganization within this compressed energy increases until it becomes an 'energy cyst'.

Energy and its relationship to therapy

Energy in Energy Psychology refers to the movement of energy and sensation. In Physics, energy is the ability to do work. Energy and momentum are also conserved. This is the core basis of Science and Technology. So everything around us is constantly changing, moving and being transformed.

There are different forms of energy. In relationship to the human body there are the following forms:

Kinetic
Potential
Biomagnetic
Bioelectromagnetic
Thermal
Bioelectric

In quantum mechanics energy is stored in quanta. This is however too small when we talk about energy cyst. In the human energy field, energy cysts are stored in bundles. Energy is also often stored in several small bundles. Human being have all the followingfields outlined above. So they have field interactions with others. The universe tends to run down ie entropy increases. Using energy we can locally decrease entropy. Life is a system to reduce entropy. The body uses up energy to tend towards order. Localized areas of increased entropy represent energy that is not biologically organized entropy. Energy cyst and blocks can persist until a person dies.

Mechanisms for Information Storage and Processing

- Biophotons

- Neuropeptides

- Currents

- Meridian Flows

- Magnetic Fields

- Electromagnetic Fields

- Semi-conductors

What are Biophotons?

Biophotons are characterized by an extremely high degree of order and can be described as a type of biological laser light which is capable of interference and appears to be responsible for many effects which ordinary incoherent light could not achieve. Its high coherency lends the biophoton wave the capability of creating order and transmitting information while chaotic, incoherent light simply transmit energy.

An indication of the coherent characteristics of biophotons is exhibited through experimentally proven knowledge that the so-called induced emission of biophotons diminishes hyperbolically, which illustrates an exclusive characteristic of coherent emission. There are clear experiment indications that biophotons have an important regulating function within the single cells, but also between the various cells.

- The radiation originates from an almost perfect coherent photon field.
- Essential sources are the DNA and corresponding resonators in the cells.
- The mechanism describes photon storage in cavities and information channels, tuned by Casimir forces.
- There is a close connection to delayed luminescence which corresponds to excited states of the coherent photon field.
- The radiation is not the product but essentially the initiator of chemical reactions in the cells, The radiation submits the information within and between cells.
- The radiation is not limited to the optical range but follows a f=const-rule (the occupation probability of the phase space is equal for all wavelengths) and extends to longer wavelengths including the so called heat radiation of the body.
- This radiation is the proper regulator and information carrier of life.

Neuropeptides and Neurotransmitters

In particular the work of Dr Pert, a researcher, pharmacologist and professor at Georgetown University, who has for the past twenty years studied the movement of neuropeptides in the body has shown that all emotions are healthy, because emotions are what unite the mind and the body, to repress these emotions and not let them flow freely is to set up a dis-integriy in the system.

Pert considers neuropeptides (amino-acid chains) and the receptors on the surface of the cells to be the biochemical basis of emotions, what she calls 'messenger molecules' linking all the major body systems.

These 'information substances' form a psycho-somatic information network linking; Psyche, mind, emotion and spirit, to soma, molecules, cells, organs, glands, tissue and all the major systems of the body, immune, autonomic, etc.

Albert Szent-Gyorgi: Electronic Conduction

Received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1937 for discovery of Vitamin C.

If a number of molecules can be arranged with regularity in close proximity as for example in a crystalline lattice, single electrons cease to belong to one or two atoms only and belong instead to the whole system. A great number of molecules may join to form energy continua, along which energy namely excited electrons may travel a certain distance.

Virtually all of the molecules forming the living matrix are semiconductors.

Molecules do not have to touch each other to interact. Energy can flow through the electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic field, along with water, forms the matrix of water. Water can form structures that transmit energy.

Robert O. Becker: The Perineural Control System

In relation to the Subtle Energies, he describes what he believes to be two separate nervous systems, one which is responsible for the generation of the channels or meridians of energy flow of the vital energies. In the developing nervous system (NS) outside the central nervous system (CNS), perineural cells, cells which support the nerves in many ways, form first and the nerves grow along the paths taken by the perineural cells. Then certain perineural cells called Schwann cells wrap themselves around the nerve axons. One result is more rapid nerve transmission of impulse. Within the CNS the perineural cells outnumber the nerve cells by a vast majority, and Schwann cell wrapping around the axons of main pathways also occurs for rapid transmission in the CNS.

Nerves are digital in output, either on or off. Nerve output is graded as to frequency and nerves respond to the frequency of stimulation. Nerves coordinate the CNS and Autonomic NS. The perineural cells are analog in output and respond to analog signals, i.e., small to little inputs and large to big outputs. Analog signals are continuously variable in strength, flow either direction and pulse in waves. Dr Becker believes the perineuralsystem to control growth, healing and biological cycles. The perineural system (PS) sense injury, creates the environment for repair and controls the healing process. Dr. Becker Found the Acupuncture Points to be stable and to produce minute (-) direct currents. The Acupuncture Points then are DC booster amplifiers spaced along the Acupuncture Meridians. Thus, the direct currents of injury are carried to the brain, interpreted as pain and stimulate the output signals for modulating the healing process. This creates a closed-loop negative feedback system. Tissue fibroblasts secrete collagen (scarring) and sensitive cells de-differentiate and proliferate to repair the injury.

In the skin, there are direct nerve to epithelial cell attachments called neuro-epidermal junctions (NEJ). There junctions are crucial for any real complete healing to occur. Both these components, perineural cells and NEJs, make up the physical structures which guide the healing properties inherent in the genetic material within the nucleus of every living cell of the body. These junctions are connected to the and are related to the meridians, so Dr. Becker believes. It is these NEJs that create the minute (-) DC at the site of injury and thus tell the brain where the injury is through the perineural cells as amplified and signal boosted along the meridians.

Herbert Frohlich: Biological Coherence

In the late 1960s, Herbert Frohlich, a Doctor of Physics, specializing in Biological Coherence predicted, on the basisof quantum physics, that the living matrix must produce coherent or laser-like oscillations.

Dr Frohlich's research goes on to report that coherent vibrations recognize no boundaries, at the surface of a molecule cell, or organism, they are collective or cooperative properties of the entire being. As such they are likely to serve as signals that integrate processes such as growth, injury repair, defense and the functioning of the organism as a whole. Each molecule, cell, tissue and organ has an ideal resonance frequency that coordinates its activities. By manipulating and balancing the vibratory circuits, complementary therapists are able to directly influence the body's systemic defense and repair mechanisms.

Research on electrically polarized molecule arrays reveals that interactions repeated by the millions of molecules within a cell membrane, tendon, muscle, bone, nerve cell or other structure, give rise to huge coherent or laser like vibrations. James Oschman, author of Energy Medicine, states Crystalline components of the living matrix act as coherent molecular antennas, radiating and receiving signals.

Tensegrity and Polymer Physics in Living Cells: Simplicity in Complexity

Great advances have been made in recent years in terms of defining the biochemical basis of cell behavior as well as the biophysical properties of the individual cytoskeletal molecules that form the structural framework of the cell. Yet, little is known about how these individual molecules join together in space to form higher order cellular structures that can change shape, move and grow. We have presented a model of cytoskeletal structure and cell mechanics that is based on the concept that living cells use tensegrity architecture to control their shape and function. Studies with stick and string tensegrity cell models predict that living cells are hard-wired to respond immediately to external mechanical stresses. This hard-wiring exists in the form of discrete cytoskeletal filament networks that mechanically couple specific cell surface receptors, such as integrins, to nuclear matrix scaffolds and to signal transducing molecules that physically associate with the cytoskeletal.

Experimental work in the lab has confirmed that many of the molecules that mediate signaling by growth factors and extracellular matrix are immobilized on the cytoskeleton and concentrated at the sites of integrin clustering in the focal adhesions that anchor the cells to their substrate. If these signaling molecules do function as a <solid-state=, then mechanical stresses may be transduced into biochemical reponses through force- dependent changes in cytoskeletal geometry or structure. Changes in cytoskeletal tension (prestress) may also play a role in signal amplification and adaptation. Recent mechanical deformation in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis.

Overview of Storage Mechanisms

For a number of years we have been exploring the molecular anatomy of the body from a new prespective. Papers published in 1981 and 1984 showed that the connective tissue, the basic construction fabric of the organism, is continuous with the cytoskeletons of cells throughout the body. The cytoskeleton is the molecular scaffolding that gives each cell its characteristic shape and ability to move about. Our new view arose from an important discovery made by a number of cell biologist. The fibers and filaments that form the cytoskeleton do not end at the cell surface. Instead, they extend across the cell membrane, and connect to the extracellular fabric, classically referred to as connective tissue. Linking the two systems together are molecules called glycoproteins, anchor proteins, integrins, and cadherins, as well as calcium ions and sugar-rich proteins called proteoglycans.

Inside each cell, elements of the cytoskeleton attach to the nuclear envelope, and therefore connect to another matrix, called chromatin, that fills the nucleus and envelopes the DNA. Even the mitochondria, the tiny 'powerhouses' within cells, contains matrices. [Fig.2] Hence the body as a whole, the organs, tissues, cells, organelles, including the nucleus, and the strands of genetic material, DNA, can be viewed as a continuous and unbroken fabric; a matrix within a matrix. We refer to this continuum as the connective tissue/cytoskeleton/nuclear matrix, or simply, the living matrix. Pienta and Coffey, at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, refer to it as a 'tissue tensegrity-matrix system'. They use Buckminster Fuller's word 'tensegrity' to emphasize the fact that the human body is continuous network of tensional elements (ligaments, tendons, fascia, muscles, and cellular microfilaments) with discontinuous compressional elements (bones and cellular microtubules). A fascinating aspect of a tensegrity design is that a vibration introduced at one point is quickly conducted throughout the entire system.

The living matrix gives the body its overall shape and features, defines the form of each organ, tissue, and cell, and extends into every nook and cranny of the organism. All movements are generated and conducted within this substance. The expanded view of the connective tissue provides a physical, physiological, energetic, and conceptual substrate for a communication network that extends throughout the organism. The nervous system is the most widely studied communication system in the living matrix, but it is by no means the only one.

A partial list of pioneers in this area included F.M. Alexander, Mantak Chia, Moshe Feldenkrais, Dolores Krieger, A. Lowen, F.A. Mesmer, B.J. Palmer, Willhelm Reich, Ida P. Rolf, Fritz Smith, Andrew T. Still, Randolph Stone, W.G. Sutherland, and Milton Trager. Some scientists who have contributed along these lines include Robert O. Becker, Harold Saxon Burr, Valerie Hunt, Hiroshi Motoyama, Candace Pert, Bruce Pomeranz, Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, and J.E Upledger.

Continuum Communication

In terms of both bodywork and biomedicine, the most exciting property of the tensegral living matrix is the ability of the entire network to generate and conduct vibrations. The vibrations occur as mechanical waves or sounds, called phonons, electrical signals, magnetic fields, electromagnetic fields, heat, and light. For the most part, these forms of energy obey established laws of physics that describe fields from any source. Signals are produced and distributed throughout the body because of properties that are common to all of the components of the living matrix.

- semiconduction : All of the components are semiconductors. This means they can both conduct and process vibrational information, much like an integrated circuit or microprocessor in a computer. They also convert energy from one form to another.

- piezoelectricity : All of the components are piezoelectric. Waves of mechanical vibration moving through the living matrix produce electrical fields, and vice versa, i.e. waves of electricity moving through the lattice produce mechanical vibrations.

- crystallinity: Much of the living matrix consists of molecules that are regularly arrayed in crystal-like lattices. This includes lipids in cell membranes, collagen molecules of connective tissue, actin and myosin molecules of muscles, and components of the cytoskeleton.

- coherency : The highly regular structures just mentioned produce giant coherent or laser-like oscillations that move rapidly throughout the living matrix and that are also radiated into the environment. These vibrations, called Frohlich oscillations occur at particular frequencies in the microwave and visible light portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. A number of scientists have detected these signals (Popp and others).

- hydration : Water is a dynamic component of the living matrix. On average, each matrix protein has 15,000 water molecules associated with it. Since many of the proteins are highly ordered, as we have just seen, the associated water molecules are also highly ordered. Water molecules are also polarized (dipoles). The living matrix organizes the dipolar water molecules in a way that constrains or restricts their ability to vibrate or rotate or wiggle about in different spatial planes. Water molecules are only free to vibrator spin in particular directions.

- continuity : As we have seen, the properties just listed are not localized, but are spread throughout the organism. While we may distinguish individual organs tissues, cells, and molecules, the living matrix is a continuous and unbroken whole.

A consequence of continuum communication is that every process taking place anywhere in the organism produces a characteristic pattern of vibrations that travels throughout the living matrix and distributes regulatory information. In terms of electronics, the signals are FM (frequency modulated) rather than AM (amplitude modulated). The frequency changes every time a cell moves or alters its shape, an organ shifts its functional state, a muscle contracts, a gland secretes, a nerve conducts an impulse or a cell metastasizes. Transmission of vibratory signals through the living matrix imparts unity of function to the organism. According to the continuum communication model, the living matrix creates a veritable 'symphony' of vibratory messages that travel to and fro, alerting each part of the organism about the activities taking place in each other part. What we refer to as 'consciousness' is the totality of these vibrations. Disease, disorder, and pain arise within portions of the vibratory continuum where information flows are restricted. Restrictions occur locally because infections, physical injury, and emotional trauma alter properties of the fabric. The living matrix retains a record or memory of the influences that have been exerted upon it. When vibrations pass through tissues, they are altered by signatures of the stored information. In this way, our consciousness and our choices are influenced by memories stored in soft tissues. AN important property of the living matrix is an ability to regenerate or to restore itself. Massage therapy and other kinds of bodywork facilitate these processes.
